Nosebleed (Nakseer)

It is not uncommon for children or even adults to have an occasional nosebleed

Causes and Symptoms :

According to Ayurveda, bleeding from the nose is due to vitiation of pitta.  If pitta has a tendency to go up, it may cause bleeding from the nose

Home Remedies :

Bleeding from the nose is not usually a very serious condition.

In an ordinary nosebleed ,

1. The patient should be asked to lie still,

2. A cold compress should be applied to his head, which should be placed at a level lower than his feet.

3. He should be asked to inhale iced water and refrain from blowing his nose.  4. If this does not help, a few drops of the    swaras (juice) of any of the following should be dropped into the nasal passage

Onions,
Dub grass,

Tender flowers of the pomegranate tree,
Shelled mango seeds,
Jwasa (Alhagi pseudalbagi).

1. In case bleeding is very severe and the patient appears to be losing too much of blood, gauze soaked with panchkshiri kashaya or alum (phitkiri), camphor, and majuphala in equal quantities and in powder form should be dropped into the nose.

2. Amla should be ground in buttermilk and the paste should be put in a little boiling ghee.  When it is cold, it should be applied to the forehead and the outside of the nose.

Surgical Remedies :

Sushruta has advised that in case all the remedies described above fail to ameliorate the condition and bleeding continues, posing a danger to the life of a patient, recourse should be taken to surgery.  It is possible that a blood vessel in the organ may have burst.  Electric cauterization is the final remedy. In case the nosebleed is due to high blood pressure, drugs to reduce it should be administered.

(Vata Sleshmika Jwara)

Influenza is an acute infectious disease of which there have been several epidemics. In the twentieth century itself, five massive epidemics have been recorded which have taken a heavy toll of human life. The severest epidemic was during 1918-19, when fifteen to twenty million people died throughout the world.

Causes and Symptoms :

Allopath believes that influenza is caused by a virus, and suggests an incubation period of one to ten days, depending on the severity of the attack. Influenza generally strikes at the change of seasons.  Ayurveda believes that the balance of the three doshas-vata, pitta, and kapha is disturbed when the seasons are changing.  Persons, who are prone to suffering from onstipation, or from diseases of the mucus membrane of the nasal passage or the throat, are more susceptible to influenza.

The onset of influenza is sudden.  It is characterized by fever ranging between 38.3'C to 39.4'C, headache, sore throat, coryza with sneezing, pains all over the body, and restlessness. The cardinal symptoms of influenza are: irritation, and later, inflammation of the nose, pharynx, and larynx; nose bleed; and a dry hacking cough.  In the later stages of the disease, there may be involvement of the lungs, particularly among elderly patients.  The disease is marked by extreme prostration, and even after recovery, the sufferer has to undergo a long period of convalescence
